OUR MISSION
Stories on Stage engages audiences with dynamic and entertaining performances of short works of literature.
Through the shared experience of live theater, we strive to inspire empathy and to break down boundaries between cultures
and generations.
VISION STATEMENT / ABOUT US
We bring stories to life!
We're about sometimes funny, sometimes moving, always thought-provoking live stage performances of all types of literature.
We're about the shared human experience of hearing great stories.
We're about building community.
We collaborate with exceptional authors and actors.
And we partner with our local schools to foster the next generation of book lovers, writers and empathetic citizens.
OUR HISTORY
Stories on Stage began in June of 2000 with a pilot performance at the Acoma Center in Denver. We formed a nonprofit corporation in 2001 and our board of directors adopted our mission. In addition to our standard programming of actors in dramatic reading of short fiction, we create special shows at the request of citizens on topics of interest to our community, including slavery in America (The Slave Narratives), mental health (The Mind's Eye), Latino culture (Beyond the Border), addiction (Addiction-Free: The Road From Hell and Bill W. and Dr. Bob), teen suicide prevention (Voices Out of Silence) and a bilingual theatrical program for elementary school students (Cuentame un Cuentito/Tell Me a Story). In November 2009, Stories on Stage created an actual book about cancer caregivers. Based on interviews with 40 caregivers from Exempla's Comprehensive Cancer Center, the book became the basis of The Calling to Care, a performance designed around the interviews.
We initiated and continue our LoDough program which allows anyone who wants to attend our program to purchase tickets on a name-your-price basis.
In 2008 Stories on Stage was selected by the Mile High Chapter of the Red Cross for its Breakfast of Champions “Everyday Heroes” Award for our efforts to increase inclusiveness in arts programming and audiences and for our emphasis on programming that addresses issues of importance to our community.
In spring, 2010 founder and Artistic Director Norma Moore retired and Anthony Powell became Stories on Stage's second artistic director. We currently perform our season shows at Su Teatro Cultural and Performing Arts Center, The King Center, and in various venues in Boulder.
